Abstrakt
Artykuł analizuje arabskie plantacje goździków na wyspach Zanzibar i Pemba w XIX w. Celem tej analizy jest opisanie funkcjonowania nieeuropejskiego modelu plantacji wykorzystującego pracę niewolników. Autor przedstawia organizację pracy przy uprawie goździków oraz charakteryzuje właścicieli i siłę roboczą. Pokazuje on nie tylko przemiany, które oddziaływały na ten system w XIX w., ale wskazuje w jakim stopniu sama instytucja plantacji przyczyniła się do zmian społecznych i ekonomicznych na wyspach. Arabski model plantacji jest ukazany na tle podobnych systemów w Amerykach, co pozwala wskazać zarówno cechy wspólne tego typu instytucji, jak i elementy charakterystyczne tylko dla Zanzibaru i Pemby.
